C-Week Update: Softball

Good news and bad news about last night's softball championship:

Good news: we get our picture up on the wall in Gregory Gym!

Bad news: they now put runner-up pictures on the wall.

Our loss to the law school team was almost over before it began. We scored two quick runs but then gave up a barrage of hits made a ton of errors en route to our worst loss of the season.

This wasn't the type of game where you could say: "if only THIS happened." It's hard to win games in which you make more errors than outs (no joke), and your 3-4-5 hitters come into the game hitting 18-for-24 with 15 runs scored in the playoffs, but go 2-for-6 on a windy championship evening.

(Here are some pictures from last night.)

The game was not representative of our season. Here were my personal highlights of the last two months:
  1. Coming back from 3 runs down in our first playoff game to win in extra innings. We turned three double plays and pushed ahead twice to beat a pretty good team. I also tagged a girl in the face to end it in extras (her face hit my glove).
  2. Nick Merola breaking out in the last game of the season and continuing to hold up the bottom part of the lineup with multi-hit games throughout the playoffs. He surprised me.
  3. Playing two Open teams to the wire with our Coed team. We had some of those teams a little scared, especially after Taryn did a front tuck on a tag and still held onto the ball.
  4. Luke, me, and Andy going 9-for-9 with 9 runs scored from the 3-4-5 spots in the semifinals.
  5. B-lo throwing a shut out in the last regular season game in house shoes.
Back to the game last night. To their credit, the law school team was very solid on both sides of the ball. My suggestion for the IM department is that ought to change the Graduate Coed league to Doctorate Coed, and just put the MBA and law school students in their own league. The teams from the professional programs are always very good and at a different level of competitiveness than the rest of the grad students.

On the other hand, it will give us something to strive for next year. The saving grace of second place.

Up next in C-Week: kickball playoffs, tonight at 7:30.
